St. George, Utah - Sylvia Rose Cook passed away on October 17, 2013 in St. George, Utah. She was born September 18, 1912 in Willard, Utah. She recently celebrated her 101 st birthday. She was the sixth child of nine brothers and sisters born to Dan Wray Woodland and Rose Amelia Woodland. All have preceded her in death with the exception of one brother, Frank Woodland, who lives in Willard, Utah.
Sylvia attended schools in Arimo, Idaho, Willard, Utah, and graduated from Brigham City High School. She spent her youth in Arimo and on the family farm in Willard where she did many chores including milking the cows. She met her future husband at her sister Anonas wedding in Syracuse, Utah and was married to Ben Samuel Cook in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on October 29, 1931. Four children were born to Ben and Sylvia. Janis in 1932, Joan in 1939, Bill in 1944 and Carol in 1948.
Sylvia worked at various places over the years including the Clearfield Naval Supply Depot. She owned hair salons in Layton and Roy, Utah. When Ben was assigned to manage the Utah State Fish Hatchery in Logan, Utah, they moved there. Sylvia owned and operated two "Tots to Teen" clothing stores in Logan and Brigham City, Utah. During those years she provided clothes to all of her grandchildren making them the best dressed kids in their neighborhoods.
She is survived by her daughter, Janis and husband, Ray Baxter of Temecula, California; daughter, Joan and husband Van Hakes of St. George, Utah; son Bill Cook and wife Sue of Bountiful, Utah; and daughter Carol and husband Ron Shay of Washington, Utah; along with grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, October, 22, 2013 at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, Utah where a viewing will be held from 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. prior to services. Interment in a family plot in the Syracuse City Cemetery will follow the services. Online guest book at www.russonmortuary.com.
