Obituary

St. George, Utah - Ted Leon Weight, 94, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on December 6, 2021, due to incidence of age in St. George, Utah. He was born on October 17,1927, in Provo, Utah to Leon Milnes Weight and Ferol Roylance. He was the youngest of four children, two sisters, Knola (Heber) Christensen and Shirley (Oather) Roper, and one brother, James Keith (Louise) Weight, all of whom have preceded him in death.

Ted grew up in Provo, Utah and attended Provo High School. After graduating, he enlisted in the United States Army and was sent to fight overseas in Germany. Three years later he was honorably discharged. He then joined the Army reserves and later served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He continued his military career as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force, working as a liaison officer recruiting young men and women into the Air Force Academy. He was a retired veteran who loved his country and was proud of his service.

After World War II, Ted attended Brigham Young University and graduated with a BA degree in Education. Later, he received his Master of Education Degree. While attending BYU, he met Shirley Prestwich from Orem, Utah. They were married on July 28, 1950, and were blessed with five children, Pennie, Mer Lynn, Terry (Lisa) Weight, Sherry (John) Ramuta, and Todd (Jocelyn) Weight. Sadly, Pennie only lived for 18 months, and Mer Lynn for two days.

In 1955, Ted began working for the Salt Lake School District as a teacher and coach at East High School. One of his great loves in life was to coach young men in football, basketball, and baseball. He made a positive difference in the lives of those he taught and coached up until the day he retired in 1987.

Ted was hired by the federal government in 1955 to work as a seasonal park ranger in Yellowstone National Park. During the thirty-four summers he worked there, he and his family met people from all over the world and built friendships that have lasted a lifetime.

In 1979, his sweet wife Shirley passed away. Four years later, he married Jolene Ahlstrom on July 26, 1983. Jolene had three children, Kelly (Kristy) Johnsen, Lori Stevens, and Jeanne Miller. She and Ted made it a priority to have their kids blend into one happy family where everyone loved and respected each other. In 2013, Jolene passed away after a short battle with cancer. At age 86, Ted fell in love once again and married Barbara Weight on January 4, 2014. Barbara had three kids, Debbie (Burnell) Waite, Barbara (Ed) Moody, and Steve (Amy) Dorrough, who quickly melded with the others to become part of Ted and Barbara's extended family.

Ted is survived by his wife, Barbara, nine children and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. They all remember Grandpa Ted for his exciting bear stories and handing out M and M's. He loved to put smiles on their faces. While working as a ranger, he often took them for hikes, sharing his love for the great outdoors and his knowledge about Yellowstone. They all have a deep and abiding love for him and will forever cherish the time spent with their Grandpa Ted.

Ted was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and Jolene served a mission in the Washington D.C. Temple Visitors Center in 1990. Ted put his trust in the Lord, Jesus Christ, and did his best to follow the Savior's path.
