IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Thomas James
Engel
June 23, 1946 – December 26, 2025
Thomas James Engel, of St. George, Utah, formerly of Mankato, Minnesota, passed away on December 26, 2025. He was born on June 23, 1946, in Mankato, where his life journey began.
In his early years, Tom experienced the profound losses of both his brother and his father, events that shaped his heart, character, and resilience. These hardships instilled in him a powerful sense of responsibility, strength, and devotion to family. They became part of the foundation that guided the rest of his life, helping him grow into a steadfast provider, protector, and source of support for those he loved.
He enjoyed a long and meaningful career in transportation, a path that allowed him to travel to every state and come to know much of the continental United States with familiarity and appreciation. Through his work, he developed a deep connection to people, places, and the beauty of the world around him.
Family and relationships were always at the center of his life. As a single, dedicated father of two, he poured his heart, effort, time, and unwavering commitment into raising his children, creating safety, laughter, and love in their lives. Later, his heart expanded again as he embraced new family, new love, and new chapters.
He was deeply passionate about his loved ones and lifelong friends, always seeking opportunities to reunite, reconnect, and nurture the bonds that mattered most. He loved working on home projects and searching for the little objects that make a home feel warm and welcoming. He cared deeply for animals, nature, and the continual evolution of the mind, body, and spirit.
He loved conversation—whether about politics, history, science, or the mysteries of life—and he valued the chance to share perspectives and grow through connection. Though he experienced hardship and heartbreak, he made the profound choice to release suffering, to love again, and to live in peace. His wish is for his loved ones to come together, celebrate a life fully lived, and move forward carrying love rather than pain. His legacy is one of connection, devotion, and emotional freedom.
Thomas James joins in eternal rest, his loving wife Dianne Elaine Grundmeyer Engel, his Parents, Norma Jeannette and Gordon Engel, and his brother Douglas. He is also survived by his brother Dennis Engel, sister Beverly Begeman, his children, Benjamin and Jessica Engel, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his loving wife, Marilou, his stepdaughters, Sarah and Nicole, and two step-grandchildren. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered.
We welcome loved ones to celebrate a life well lived and a path restored to peace.
Private services and a memorial will be held in several intimate settings, to be honored and remembered with his loving family.
