IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Thomas Emil
Isom
July 21, 1932 – December 30, 2022
Hurricane, Utah – Thomas Emil Isom, 90, passed away December 30, 2022, in Hurricane, Utah. He was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho on July 21, 1932, to Ruth and Bernard Isom. He was the third of five children and the only boy. While he was still very young the family moved from Idaho to Hurricane where he grew up.
Shortly after graduating from Hurricane High School, Tom was called by his country to serve in the armed forces. He completed his basic training at Fort Ord, CA and served the remainder of his time at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. He always had a strong love for his country. One of the memories that he spoke of often after his honorable discharge and return to Hurricane, was how his mom and dad traveled to Virginia to meet him, and together they drove back to Utah. His mother kept a record of the trip in a small notebook which he cherished. He was very happy to return to his beloved Hurricane.
Tom married Cleo Matthews on August 24, 1956. Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George Temple on February 7, 1970. Together they raised four children: Shanna (Jack) Britton, Mike (Lisa) Isom, Steve (Alayne) Isom and Eric (Kathy) Isom. They were also blessed with 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Tom loved his family dearly and enjoyed spending time with them. He was a schoolteacher by profession - teaching science, drafting and industrial arts. He influenced the lives of many students throughout his 30 years of teaching. He was also a skilled craftsman in diverse trades such as wood working, electrical, welding and construction. One of his greatest joys after retirement was installing solar systems for many cabin owners on Kolob Mountain. He also enjoyed horseback riding, hunting, fishing, riding four-wheelers and spending time on Kolob Mountain in the family cabin that he constructed.
Tom was also very active in the community, serving for many years on the Washington County Fair Board and as a member of the Washington County Search and Rescue. He was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in various callings. The two most memorable were Sunday School Superintendent and Bishop of the Hurricane 1 st Ward. He loved the gospel and loved those that he served. This has been evident over the years as his family has received numerous expressions of gratitude and appreciation from those he served.
Tom is survived by his four children, 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters: Sybil Hirschi, Lorna Hirschi and Karen Hunsaker. He is preceded in death by his dear wife, Cleo Isom; parents, Ruth and Bernard Isom; sister, Margaret Beatty; and grandchild, Melanie Britton.
The family would like to thank those who have cared for dad during the last few years of his life. Thanks so much to Kami Sharp, Hollie Isom and the wonderful staff at the Beehive Home in Hurricane. The loving care of all these individuals was such a blessing to our father.
