Obituary

St. George, Utah - With his wife Lenore and his children at his side, Thomas J. Madden, 76, St. George, UT, died peacefully at home December 16, 2012, from the insidious effects of cancer. Tom was born June 9, 1936, to Eva and George Madden and raised in New York City. He attended the Parochial schools of Holy Cross grammar, graduating from St. Ann's Academy High School, after which he served three years in the New York Army National Guard before enlisting in the USAF. During his 23 years of service his assignments took him to nine stateside and four overseas locations including Guam, France, Southeast Asia, and the Philippines. After having been awarded numerous decorations & citations over the years, Tom retired as a Senior Master Sergeant, Air Traffic Control Superintendent. Upon competing two years of college, Tom worked in Property Management for five years in both California and Utah, finally retiring in Springdale before moving to St. George. Several years passed and through mutual friends from church, Tom met Lenore on a blind date. It was indeed love at first sight and after a short courtship, they were married July 7, 2001. Both active members of St. George Catholic Church, they had the beautiful wedding Mass that they had always wanted, but had not previously had. Soon after, Tom and Lenore answered their callings and have served continually as Extraordinary Eucharist Ministers. Tom also served in various capacities with the church, including the finance and building fund committees. To say Tom and Lenore were happy would be a gross understatement, for they'd been on their honeymoon for nearly twelve years. They were fortunate over the years in being able to travel extensively throughout the United States and in several other countries. Tom loved embracing new cultures, which began with his military career, and was so grateful for the years of love and happiness with his loving wife, whom he adored. Along with his many years of service to the country he loved deeply, he cherished his children and grandchildren and every moment he had with them. Prior to meeting Lenore, Tom was blessed with four sons, a daughter and an adopted son. With their families, sons Tom, Chris and Dan reside in Illinois; daughter Teresa in Washington state as does his adopted son Stephen; and youngest son Mark in Northern California. His stepchildren Tanya, George, Greg, Alex, and Tall Malysheff reside with their families in Oregon and Washington. Lenore has two sons as well, Derek and Adam, whose families immediately embraced Tom as Grandpa. Derek with wife and family reside in St. George; Adam with wife and family in Las Vegas. Together Tom and Lenore have eight children, twenty-two grand-children, and four great-grandchildren. Survivors also include sisters Rita Giombetti of Ashland, MA, Frances McGrath of Camarillo, CA, and all of their children, grand-children, and great-grandchildren. A Rosary will be held Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd. A Memorial Mass will take place Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. George Catholic Church, 259 West 200 North, St. George, Utah. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary 435-673-4221. The family wishes to extend personal thanks to Dr. Joseph Te for his care and treatment, Dixie Regional Medical Center, and the hospice personnel, especially Tamie, from Community Nursing Services. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the cancer center for research.
