Obituary

On Wednesday, July 1, 2026, Velda Leany Gubler peacefully graduated from this life with high honors surrounded by her family at age 97. She was born the oldest of four children to Vivian Reed Leany and the LaFave Jones Leany on April 19, 1929.

Velda lived a life of goodness and service starting from a very young age. She worked hard cleaning houses and tending children. She saved her money and used it wisely. Her early years growing up in St George gave her many fond memories, which she cherished throughout her life. She was introduced to Orwin Henry Gubler by a friend when he returned from serving in the Navy in World War II. He was waiting for his mission call. One month after Orwin completed his mission to California Velda and Orwin were married in the St. George Temple on January 20, 1949. Orwin’s and Velda’s honeymoon was postponed because of road closures from a major snowstorm. Two days after they were married, Orwin was able to purchase the first parcel of land which became the start of his 150-acre farm.

Velda was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints serving faithfully in many callings throughout her life. She had great faith. Her family knew that when she prayed her prayers were answered. A couple of her favorite sayings were,” A job worth doing is worth doing well” and “You can do anything if you want to do it bad enough.” She lived her life by these words.

Velda was an amazing seamstress and loved making dolls of all kinds and she sewed beautiful clothes for them. Not only did she sew beautiful clothing for her dolls, but also for her two daughters. She compiled many family histories and organized numerous family reunions. She devoted her life to being a wife, homemaker, and mother. Family was her top priority and prized possession.

Velda was an extraordinary person, who was highly gifted and talented. She loved Pine Valley, making dolls, serving others, cooking, decorating and much more. When the children were older, she worked for St .George Savings and Loan for 16 years. She was active in the Utah Farm Bureau, both on the local and state level. She was patriotic and served as an election judge for many years.

Velda had a special group of friends that she associated with for over 90 years. Orwin and Velda built a home on the farm, which became her home for over 70 years.

She is survived by her loving children: Scott Gubler, Brenda Haight, Blaine Gubler (Janet), Mark Gubler (Karen), Gina Hall (Brent); a brother-in-law DuWayne Eyre; 20 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Orwin Gubler; her son, Galen Gubler; parents, Vivian and LaFave Leany; son-in-law, Robin Haight; daughter-in-law, Cheri Gubler; two-grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Velda Gubler’s family gives great thanks to the wonderful people who helped care for her during the last few years of physical limitations. She had a great team helping her make it to the finish line.
