Verda Mae Nunley St. George, UT - Our beloved mother passed away March 3, 2011, on her 79th birthday, at her home in St. George surrounded by her family. She was born on March 3, 1932 in Panguitch, Utah to Myron and Alda Cooley. Verda was the first daughter of ten children. Verda married Virgil Thamert in 1947 and together they had five children: Larry, Linda, Bonnie, Barry and Benny. They divorced in 1968 and Virgil later died in 1975. Verda married James Anglum Angie Nunley in December 1972. Instantly her family of five children became a blended family that now totaled nine children. Throughout the years, the entire family spent time together in Salt Lake City, Utah, Tabiona, Utah, and Apache Junction, Arizona. Verda was raised in Utah, graduating from South High School. She lived in California, Montana, Utah and Arizona. She retired from her job as a purchasing agent for Salt Lake City. She was the first woman elected to the Salt Lake City Employees Appeals Board. When Verda and Angie retired they split time between Apache Junction, Salt Lake City and Tabiona. Verda was a volunteer with the Tabiona Fire Department, taught Aerobics, and taught and performed clogging. She was a devoted member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and her faith was always a big part of her life. She enjoyed many other activities such as rock hunting, gardening, bowling, hunting, fishing and most recently knitting. She truly enjoyed getting a table of friends or family together for an innocent game of cards. She had many long lasting friends in Salt Lake City, Tabiona, Panguitch, Apache Junction and St. George who will miss her. She is survived by her sons and daughters: Larry (Lonnie) Thamert of Washington, UT, Linda (John) Taylor of Mesquite, NV, Bonnie Johnson of St. George, UT, Barry (Connie) Thamert of Camarillo, CA, Benny (Sunna) Thamert of Vancouver, WA, Robert (Ruth) Nunley of West Valley City, UT, Sharlene (Erland) Reber of Holiday, UT, Jim (JoAnn) Nunley of Salt Lake City, UT, Frank (Penny) Nunley of Phoenix, AZ, her brother and sisters: Elva (Leo) Robins of Scipio, UT, Rea (Leon) Allsop of Salt Lake City, UT, Ted (Jackie) Cooley of Washington, UT, Arlene (Randy) Bartholomew of Fillmore, UT, 22 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Each one occupied a very special place in Verdas heart and life. Verda was preceded in death by her husband, James Anglum Angie Nunley, her parents, Myron and Alda Cooley, brothers and sister: Bill Cooley, Carol Christensen, Ken Cooley, Dever Cooley, and Carl Cooley. A memorial service for Verda will be held a t Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, UT, on March 12 at 10:30 a.m. Following services, a celebration of life will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the Bloomington Country Club, 3174 South Bloomington Drive East, St. George, Utah.
