Obituary

St. George, Utah - Walter S. Killian, age 91, of St. George, Utah, passed away November 1, 2020 at the Southern Utah Veterans Home.

Walt was a dedicated and hardworking father, grandfather, husband, uncle, and brother. He spent his entire life living independently. He had a fun, competitive nature. He especially liked golfing and had the skills (and a little luck) to make six hole-in-ones! In his younger years he enjoyed bowling in leagues, and in his later years, Wii bowling. Walt enjoyed annual summer vacations in Illinois at his daughter Eileen's house, while visiting with family and fishing with his grandson James Walter Prillaman. He enjoyed weekly dinners with his daughter Ann-Marie and enjoyed keeping up with his son David's construction work. He was proud of his flower and rose gardens and could be found doing yard work up until his last days. During his last year of life, he found a new artistic hobby: painting pictures and doing "diamond paintings" with thousands of beads.

Walt was blessed to have three loves in his life. He married Sally Piatkiewicz on March 2, 1957; she passed away on November 12, 1992. He married Carol Kerwer on June 2, 1994; she passed away on December 4, 2004. He spent 16 of his last 17 years with his dear friend, Ruby Lapray, until she passed away on May 15, 2019.

Born April 24, 1929 in North Chicago, Illinois, Walt was the son of the late John Killian and Mary (Kendzior) Killian. He attended Holy Rosary grade school and graduated from Waukegan High School in 1947. He served his country as a Corporal with the US Army of the 140 th Anti-Aircraft Battalion (AAS AW BN APO 6) in the Korean War.

He spent his working years raising a family and living in Libertyville and Waukegan, Illinois.

Walt retired in 1987 after 40 years of employment with Abbott Laboratories, North Chicago, Illinois.  After retirement, he and his wife Sally made their home in St. George, Utah. He was a member of the St. George Catholic Church and was a 4 th Degree Knights of Columbus-Bishop Scanlan Assembly, St. George Utah. He was also a member of the American-Croatian Waukegan Tamburitzans, American Legion, VFW, and volunteered at the Elks Lodge, St. George, helping the visually impaired by repairing thousands of specially designed cassette tape players. He was an active member of his St. George subdivision, helping with pool and yard maintenance.

He is survived by his children: Eileen (Terry) Prillaman, David Killian, and Ann-Marie Killian; his grandchildren: Jennifer Prillaman (Andrew Francis), James Prillaman, and Timothy Killian; brother, Leo (Dolores) Killian; brother-in-law, Henry Piatkiewicz; and many nieces and nephews. He appreciated the loving care of his daughter, Eileen, during his last years of life, along with his home health care nurse Trish Johnson, CNA Marc Brandt, and pastoral assistant Carole Drake.

Walt was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary (Kendzior) Killian; his siblings: Stephanie (Al) Swirski, Frank (Mary) Killian, John (Helen) Killian, Thaddeus (Rose) Killian, Lillian (Lester) Curry, and Chester (Zenia) Killian.

The family wishes to thank Canyon Home Health Care, and Southern Utah's Veteran's home for their kind and loving care.

A private burial will be at Ascension Cemetery in Libertyville, Il.
