Obituary

Hurricane, Utah - Walter Joseph Toone, 73, passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2016, after a courageous battle with leukemia. He was surrounded by his family.
Walt was born on March 12, 1943 to Hyrum and Irma Swett Toone in Vernal, Utah. He was the third of nine children. Growing up, one place he always loved to visit was his grandparent's ranch in the Uinta Mountains, near Flaming Gorge. He returned there every opportunity he had, and this is where his work ethic and love of the outdoors were nurtured.
After Walt graduated from Wasatch High School in 1962, he joined the Marine Corps. He served as a sea going Marine on the USS Hornet, before a tour of duty in Vietnam, where he was wounded in combat and earned the Purple Heart. His military service was always a source of pride for him and his family.
Shortly after returning from Vietnam, he met Linda Hill. They were married on January 6, 1968 and sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Walt and Linda were completely devoted to each other and their children. They demonstrated by example the importance of marriage and family.
Walt was a successful photographer, winning many awards. He and Linda owned a business, Aspen Photography, in Vernal for 18 years. In 1988 they moved their family to Hurricane, Utah, where Walt took a job at Zion National Park. He loved the outdoors, so this was the perfect setting for him. He retired in 2007. In addition, he and his family volunteered for the Huntsman world Senor Games for eighteen years. Walt also participated in the cycling events numerous times.
His two great passions were his family and the outdoors, and he combined the two as often as he could. From trips to King's Peak, Mount Whitney, or Death Valley, to walks around the block, Walt was always up for an adventure and loved to have as many of his children and grandchildren around him as possible. Walt had a humble, unassuming nature, combined with a dry sense of humor and quick wit. He loved to read about the world around him, and was rarely seen without a book. Walt valued education, graduating from the University of Utah in 1971 with a degree in political science.
Walt was always willing to help wherever he was needed, and most often did so without any recognition. He touched many more lives that he realized. While his loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him, we are thankful for the years we had him, and find peace in the knowledge that we will, one day, meet again.
Walter is survived by his wife, Linda Hill Toone, and their children, Kristin Evans of Hurricane, Jacqueline Ahlin (Del) of Clinton, UT, Jonathan Toone (Emily) of Kaysville, UT, Jeffery Toone (Jennifer) of Sacramento, CA, and Carolyn Olsen, (Ryan) of Riverton, UT: four siblings: Elaine North of Hurricane, Utah, Reah Allred of Vernal, Utah, Rayola Emmel of Santa Rosa, California and Larry Toone of Manteca, California. Walt was the proud grandfather to fifteen grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings; Grant Toone, Nolan Toone, Michael Toone and Joan Toone.
