Obituary

LaVerkin, Utah – Wayne Hyrum Jones passed from this life and into the arms of his sweetheart, Elma on February 24, 2025. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren before his passing. Wayne was born in St. George, Utah on January 18, 1932, to Clarence Amos and Madeline Empey Jones. Being the baby of the family, he had two older brothers and one sister.

Wayne grew-up in St. George's sand town area and enjoyed life. He loved hunting with his dad, brothers and uncles and later with his own sons and grandsons. Even when he could no longer get out and hike over the hills he would still go out to "deer camp". Fishing was also a great passion. He and his friends spent many days in a boat drowning worms. Good thing Mom and some of the kids liked fish because Dad only liked to catch them.

Wayne was an avid scouter; he was an Eagle Scout and helped many boys rise through the ranks. He was the Scout Master for many years in Cedar and again in LaVerkin. Camps and hikes were some of his favorite times to teach the boys how to prepare for life.   He was awarded the Silver Beaver for his many years of service.

In 1950 he met the love of his life, Elma Kaye Workman. They were married on January 4, 1951. After finishing school at Dixie State, they moved to Cedar City where Wayne worked as a lineman for the power company. After many years working out in the snow and cold he transferred to the Hurricane office where he finished out his working life.

After he retired from the power company, he would go help Mom and the lunchroom ladies get food out of the storage room until he convinced her to retire so they could serve a mission. They served in Oklahoma, West Virginia and twice as camp host for Jorgan River Properties.

Wayne was the father of Karl, Linda (David) Holdaway, Brent, Annette (Vance) Bishop, Dave (Shanna), and Sue (Ron) Stratton; grandfather of 24; "Grandpa Great" to 84; and great-great-grandpa to 10. The greats loved to come see him, he always had goodies they could have and the joy they brought to him was plain to see on his face.

We as a family would lie to thank Beehive Homes for their loving care and Advanced Home Health for all their help in caring for Dad.
