LaVerkin, Utah - Chick was born to Wilford Horace McPhail and Ivy Sessions McPhail on August 2, 1932 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He arrived as the fourth child in his family with Elaine McPhail Parkinson, Dorothy McPhail Pierce and Norma McPhail preceding him. Chick's brothers, Kenneth McPhail and David McPhail followed him in birth. His brother Kenny and his sister Elaine survive Chick.
Chick graduated from South High School. He worked briefly as a cabinet maker before being drafted into the Army and fighting in the Korean war. He was honorably discharged from the Army on August 23, 1954 and returned home to marry Marilyn Stewart Stayner on May 28, 1951. Their marriage was sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple at a later date.
Chick worked his way up at the Utah Power and Light Company in Salt Lake, rising to the position of journeyman meterman. He worked for Utah Power and Light for over 25 years. He accepted a job at Nevada Power Company where he managed the Meter Department and the Meter Validity Department.
Chick's wife Marilyn died in October of 1978 and he married Kathleen "Kay" Kerwin in June of 1979. He was also preceded in death by his son, Michael Vaughn McPhail who passed away on March 18, 2012.
Chick had eight children with his wife Marilyn: Gordon Charles McPhail, Ronne Stewart McPhail, Randall Mark McPhail, Douglas Kent McPhail, Marianne McPhail Sylva, Thomas Hyde McPhail, Michael Vaughn McPhail, and Heidi McPhail Hito. His marriage to Kay brought Chick two step children: Colleen Van Leeuwen Patchin and Carl Van Leeuwen. Chick has 29 grandchildren and 10 great grand children.
Chick passed away on August 23, 2012 at home with his wife Kay at his side. He died peacefully after suffering a recent illness.
Chick will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity and above all else for his hard work, his honesty, and his integrity. He was loved by all who knew him and took great joy in helping others.
He was a kind and loving father, a devoted husband, a friend to all who knew him, and he typified the term "selfless". He will be missed greatly by all who knew him, especially for his comments that were always guaranteed to raise a smile on faces of those he shared them with.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the LaVerkin LDS Stake Center, 481 North Main Street, LaVerkin, Utah with A gathering will be prior to services at 1:30 p.m. at the Stake Center. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Hurricane Valley Mortuary, (435) 635-9922.
