Obituary

St. George, Utah – William Herbert Doughty, a true renaissance man, lived great and died heroically after enduring a long degenerative illness.  He passed away peacefully on February 17, 2022, surrounded by family.  Born on September 1, 1931, to Lillis Johnston and Glenn Arthur Doughty in Orange California, he spent his childhood in the Los Angeles, Pacific Palisades area.

His motto, "There is no magic in a small dream," is the essence of his life.  He was confident, driven, and determined to "Build God's Kingdom," no matter the cost.  His life got especially exciting when, after several attempts, he won over the beautiful East Coast debutante Carolyn Powers Cushman.  They had a whirlwind romance and wedding in Germany while he served in the army.  He and Carolyn later took up residence in the Los Angeles area.

His entrepreneurial passion and indomitable generosity gave rise to several successful businesses and nonprofit organizations.  Among them are American Investment Counseling, Quantum Financial, the now internationally recognized National Academy for Child Development (NACD), Institute for Constitutional Education (ICE), Youth for America (YFA), and George Wythe College.

His big dreams also included a large family, which resulted in nine children.  He inspired each of his children to be optimistic and forward thinking like him.  He and Carolyn created a dynamic home environment filled with fun, activity, and lots of guests.   He demonstrated great courage and faith when he resigned as lay minister of the thriving Rolling Hills Covenant Church in Palos Verdes, California to become a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1971.

The family endured tragedy in 1978 when youngest son, two-year-old Jeffrey, suffered a near drowning accident and resultant brain injury.  Bill taught his children great sacrifice and love as week after week he fasted and blessed him. Bill's faith was a tremendous strength to Carolyn and all of the children as they helped care for Jeff, who lived for another 15 years.

When he met Dr. Cleon Skousen and began studying the U.S. Constitution, his dreams took a new, but equally exciting and challenging path.  He and Carolyn pulled up their Palos Verdes, California roots and moved to southern Utah.  There, he began a constitutional education movement that impacted thousands of young people and resulted in the launching of George Wythe College in Cedar City.   For a period of time, he and Carolyn lived in Mammoth Valley where Bill continued to teach, write a weekly Doughty report, and prove in three "mammoth" green houses, you could grow prolific produce even in a subzero climate.

Bill was a builder of businesses, communities and most importantly people.  He launched many young people into successful ventures as he tutored and encouraged them to believe in themselves and to follow their dreams.  But his greatest achievement was the enduring legacy of faith in God, courage, and vision he left for his posterity.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Carolyn, who will celebrate their 66 th anniversary on the day of his funeral service.  He will be greatly missed by his children: Bill (Julie) of Stockton, California; Liz (Eric) Ottesen formerly of San Diego and currently Salt Lake City, Utah; Susan (Brian) Richardson of Sandy, Utah; Chris (Leslie) Doughty of Boston, Massachusetts; Steve (Becky) Doughty of St George, Utah; Kim (Craig) Simmerman of Cedar City, Utah; Charlotte (Clarke) Bjarnason of Kansas City, Kansas. His posterity includes 39 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.   He is preceded in death by his parents, Lillis and Glenn Doughty; his brother, Nick Doughty; his children: Jeffrey and Catherine Doughty; and grandchildren: Dan Ottesen, Johnathon, Catherine, and Noah Simmerman.

The Doughty family would like to express a special thanks to Hospice and Ovation's Memory Care for the loving support they provided during the last few months of his life.
