IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Wilma M.
Rowell
March 25, 1923 – May 9, 2013
Salt Lake City, Utah - Wilma Maland Rowell passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2013, at her home in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was born on March 25, 1923, in Lakeshore, Utah, the oldest of four children, to Ernest E. and Iva Huff Maland. She was raised and educated in Spanish Fork, Utah.
From a very early age, Wilma possessed an adventurous spirit that Spanish Fork couldnt contain. At age 18, she left her home and moved to Salt Lake City, where she lived with her dear Aunt Melba Armstrong, and began a career in the printing business. From there, she spent a short time in Sparks, Nevada, living with another much-loved aunt and uncle. Then with the urging of her best friend, she left to seek her future in Northern California. She soon found employment with the H.S. Crocker Company, a printing company she would serve for the next 35 years.
It was there she met the love of her life, Charles Graham Rowell, and they were married in San Francisco, on March 4, 1947. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple after Chic had joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Together, they raised three children while living in the towns of Millbrae and San Carlos, California. They enjoyed a love affair in this life that lasted nearly 50 years until Chics death in March of 1996. In 1989, Wilma and Chic sold their home in San Carlos and moved to St. George, Utah, to enjoy their golden years.
Wilma loved traveling and enjoyed seeing every region of the United States including Alaska, New England, the South and Southwest, while traveling with Chic in their motorhome. She was the perfect grandma, always spoiling her grandchildren while they came for extended visits to her home. It was easy to be Wilmas friend. She loved all people and was accepting of everyone regardless of race, religion, family background, or political views. She enjoyed her many callings in the LDS Church, but was particularly fond of her service for many years as an ordinance worker in the Oakland and St. George Temples.
She is survived by her children: James William Rowell (Molly), Edwin Montgomery Rowell (Nancy), and Frances Elaine Hansen (Timothy); 5 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Joyce Tanner. The family wishes to thank Rosemary Silva for her kind and loving service to Wilma during the last years of her life.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, May 16, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah. Friends and family may call on the Thursday, prior to services, at 10 :00 a.m at the Mortuary. Interment will follow the services at the St. George City Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
