Obituary

Yvonne Christensen Ahern passed away, peacefully in her sleep in the early evening of April 20, 2013 while alone with her loving husband of 67 years. In a touching moment, he was able to sing to her as she passed. At the time, they were living at Cliff View Assisted Living Center, after living for the previous 20 years in their home in Santa Clara, UT. She was born in St. Charles, ID on March 18, 1923 to Leslie Jacob Christensen and Marguerite Pugmire Christensen. She spent most of her pre-married life in Pocatello, ID. On June 21, 1946 she married Norman Carl Ahern, Jr. in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. Within two months of the wedding, Norman was called on an LDS mission to France. After two years, she was called to join him for the last six months of his mission. In the sixteen years after their return, they had nine children, fulfilling her greatest desire in life; to be a mother. Norman and Yvonne raised their children in Salt Lake City, UT; and in Downey, Norwalk, and La Mirada, CA. On retirement they moved to Santa Clara, UT in 1992. Besides the great love she had for her family, she loved music. She was an accomplished pianist and organist. She became the ward organist at age 12, a position that she held into her eighties. She had a beautiful soprano voice and helped instill a love for music in her children. She enjoyed walking with friends, collecting interesting rocks and porcelain dolls, reading her scriptures, and taking drives to beautiful places. She was dedicated to service, holding many positions in her cherished LDS Church and reaching out to individuals wherever she was. Even in her final months, she was able to brighten the lives of her care givers with her heart-warming smile and gentle ways. She is preceded in death by her daughter Janyth. She is survived by her husband, Norman, and her children: Dennis Ahern (Louise) of Layton, UT; Wendell Ahern (Janell) of Rupert, ID; Jolynne Middleton (David) of Fullerton, CA; Kenneth Ahern (Sandy) of Severna Park, MD; Joseph Ahern (Aida) of Compton CA; Ted Ahern (Marti) of Austin, TX; Bill Ahern (Monica) of Glendale, AZ; Carolyn Henderson (Keith) of Laguna Beach, CA; and 32 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Santa Clara LDS 9th Ward Chapel, 3680 Pioneer Parkway, Santa Clara, Utah. Visitations will be held Friday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd. and on Saturday, prior to services, at 10:00 a.m. at the Chapel. Interment will be held at the Santa Clara City Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
